My Wedding Day Diva

Super fun news: I’ve been tagged by My Wedding Day Diva as an industry preferred vendor!

I’m excited to be working with this company. They are absolutely wonderful.

Here’s an excerpt from their site:

“Welcome to MyWeddingDayDiva.com. We are so excited to help you dazzle your big day! From little to large every detail on your wedding day is extremely important.

Over the last 12 years, the founder of My Wedding Day Diva has worked with many elite organizations in the DC area that are held in high regard for their aesthetics and entertainment principles such as the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals and Washington Redskins in addition to working for the United States House of Representatives. These experiences have provided her with the ability to execute premium services with attention to detail, precision and keen eye needed to make your day absolutely perfect and flawless.

How are we different from other services?  We do IT ALL for your big day. We look at your wedding as a whole not just as a venue and vendors. Not only do we design and coordinate your wedding, our packages include fashion and decor styling.  We take the intricate details and help dazzle the special touches that take your day from just a wedding to your personalized love story.

We also take over the tedious organizational tasks — master checklist, itinerary, organizing the bridal party, spread sheets to manage your guests, providing event information, vendor management, helping with photos all while getting Grandma a glass of champagne!

We will personalize and customize any of our packages to fit your needs.”

I can personally vouch for the exquisite taste and attention to detail that goes into everything MWDD is involved with.

Hotheads Hair Extensions, Makeover

I do hair extensions day in and day out, and I always love what I do, but sometimes I get a client in my chair who’s transformation still blows me away.

This client is a cancer survivor. Her hair had finally started to grow back in and she was visiting someone in California where she went to get her first ever set of hair extensions. They stylist ordered no where near enough hair, and then proceeded to remove much of the length from the hair, and then began cutting into her natural hair in an effort to blend in the additions.

We went through and removed all of her existing hair extensions, colored her hair to a more even base color, and then reapplied a very full head of Hotheads tape in hair extensions that we ordered just for her.

The end result is that you can’t even tell she has extensions! She was really happy with the end look and that made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. This is why I do what I do.

Building Systems, Tips Four and Five

4– Have a no book list.

–Help your front desk learn how you want these clients addressed. There are clients you should stop doing. Create a plan for removing them from your schedule. Create a plan for recognizing “time suck” clients who you cannot please but for some reason keep coming back. You’ll feel better, and your days will run more smoothly and with fewer unforeseen delays.

5– Build a trust with your shampoo technicians and assistants.

–What can you do to teach them to do things the same way you do? If you can get them to follow the patterns you set then you won’t have as much work to do and you can take an extra client or two every day. That adds up.

Anyways, I hope that you guys can all get some of this rolling for yourselves, and spend some time building your own even bigger better systems for making yourself and your salons as efficient and awesome as possible.

Building Systems, Tip Three

3– Have a standard consultation pattern.

—This sounds pretty easy, but it’s not. You know better than anyone else what kind of problems you’ve run into in the past from thinking you and your client were both on the same page, so pick your questions to help troubleshoot past experiences. Maybe you want to require a photo? Maybe you want to run down a checklist of current hair care? I don’t know. But whatever it is, you will save so much time by never skipping on of the questions on your list.

Building Systems, Tip Two

2– Plan your pre-booking.

–As I’ve said in the last tip, I tell them when they should book their next appointment and what it should be for. I also remind them that they might not get the appointment they want if they aren’t pre-booking. It may seem like something simple and obvious, but you’d be surprised how much making this a standard part of your routine can change the flow of your schedule and client intake. When clients pre-book their regular appointments your schedule remains more consistent and you can better handle true emergencies and last minute requests.

Building Systems: Tip One

Fast Five:

1– Plan your retail technique.

–Having a plan in mind for how you approach retail helps you make sure you’re not missing out on sales by simply forgetting, or not having a way to work it in. One of my personal favorite ways to integrate retail is by knowing that I will always go over what I’m using while I’m using it on them, mentioning it all by name, and then when I’m done and walking them to the front desk I just pick up everything I used from the shelves and bring it with me. Before I move to my next client I tell the front desk coordinator how many weeks out to book their next appointment and what for, along with telling them and my client which one of the products I’ve brought up with me is the most important to get now. The result is that more then 50% of my clients purchase 2 or more products when they come in.RETAIL-SHELVES-2

Building Systems

This article series is aimed at motivated stylists who are looking at their schedule and looking at their income and wondering why there’s a disconnect. If you’re a salon owner or manager looking at some of these you may find you need to get your team on board before you can fully utilize these techniques.

That “I feel really busy because I never seem to be able to get everyone in when they first want, but my paychecks don’t show me as having an increase from my past income” feeling is something many of us know all too well.

I’m here to give you 5 fast ideas for things you can do to increase your income by building effective time management systems. Put a system in place and always, I mean ALWAYS, follow it and you’ll see great results not only in your income but in overall client satisfaction as well.

The Best of Both Worlds

Screen Shot 2016-03-31 at 2.17.30 PMI’m super excited to be posting about this, albeit a bit late. I’ve been crazy busy with classes (taking and teaching) and I just wanted to share this super cool flyer.

Most of the classes I do are intimate salon settings with just a handful of stylists at a time, every so often I get to do really awesome things like this. I love all the education work I do, but seeing my name and photo on a flyer really do something for my soul.

For this particular class I’m teamed up with Darian Gavin who is another awesome educator from the Twin State family. He works with hair extensions as well as being an educator for Brazilian Blowout.

We’re really excited to be doing this class and helping to spread some serious hair love.

Facial Scrubs for Body Scrubs

While I was at the New York International Beauty Show (#IBSNY2016 if you want to search the Instagram tags), I made several interesting purchases, along with things from my Sephora haul last month.

I’ve already got combination skin so I know that heavily moisturizing facial scrubs tend to trigger acne for me. Since I still wanted to try stuff out I decided I’d use them as body scrubs instead. This is actually one of my favorite uses when I buy or receive products that aren’t quite a perfect fit for me.

First up was Rebels Refinery Advanced Clear Skin Facial Scrub which was absolutely awesome and comes from a very cool company with the most amazing smelling Moisturizing Beard Oil that I’ve ever smelled. This scrub had a really nice gritty texture and made me feel super clean, but it’s definitely designed for men’s skin and to pair with a lighter moisturizer than what I use (and probably not use make-up with either). I did notice that my skin was super smooth, and when used as a body scrub all over I had no ingrown hair issues, razor burn, or even a need to use body lotion. For someone with dryer skin, or as a body scrub I rate this as one of the best I’ve used, but for my face it’s a waste.

Second I tried my luck with Ole Henriksen Walnut Complexion Scrub which had similar issues. Absolutely wonderful as a combination body scrub body wash but not really working for my face. Great texture, and decent lather when mixed with water, nice smell.

Hopefully the next set of things I get my hands on prove to be a better fit for my skin type as we approach warmer weather again. Get stoked!

Got any recommendations you think I should check out? Leave them in the comments section and I’ll be sure to take a look.

Not Always a Win

Not everything I buy to try is a product I’m destined to love forever.

Recently, in my Sephora haul, I purchased Glam Glow Super Mud to try. My good friend and former assistant, Vanessa who works at the Springfield Town Center Sephora location, assured me I would love it. While I acknowledge it is a beauty junkie favorite, and it did great things for my skin, I just can’t get past the scent.

It contains several herbal extracts, like licorice, which give it a distinct smell that ends up being extremely reminiscent of Jagermeister. I just can’t handle it.

This is a bit of a loss because my skin does feel incredibly refreshed and clean. The goal of using it tonight was to make up for three days of chain-smoking in my car traveling to teach hair extension classes out of town. It worked amazingly so I’m disappointed a bit, but I’m planning on gifting it to a current staff member who really enjoys Jager.
