Toners, Fillers, and Fantasy Applications

img_20130916_135418.jpg

This is by far my favorite color theory visual I’ve ever worked with.

Color theory is often undervalued for coloring services but it comes into play heavily when working on corrective color applications, and even more so when working with fantasy applications.

Hairstylists have a pretty easy time explaining to clients the colors used to cancel out undesired undertones, and explaining the benefits of filler for preventing “hollow” colors. It’s harder to explain to clients that they can’t have lavender hair unless it can be made white first or else they’ll just have pastel brown.

Colors directly opposite of one another on the color wheel cancel each other out and create shades of brown (shown on the side of the chart). This information can be used to tone hair, or to accentuate tones.

The side labeled fillers consists of colors that exist as natural undertones when prelightening hair. If hair is lightened and needs to be dyed a natural shade that is darker then this pigment will need to be refilled first.

The side labeled toners is typically used to cancel out underlying pigment after hair is lightened. Green for red, blue for copper, violet for gold.

When doing fantasy color applications it’s important to keep this information in mind so you can get the results you’re looking for. Good luck everyone!

An Open Letter to Every New Stylist

You will have bad days.

You will have clients you cannot please.

There will be bosses and supervisors who do not understand the work you do.

This does not define you.

Success is your ability to rise above the bad days.

Take every bad experience and build from it.

Remember: every day you are growing and gaining knowledge.

Work for yourself and leave a piece of your soul in every happy client.

There will always be bad days, but there will be more good ones.

Growth vs Extensions

As an advocate for healthy hair care and an extension specialist, people are constantly asking me about whether or not hair extensions can cause damage to the growth pattern of your hair.

It’s a complicated issue because poorly managed or poorly apply hair extensions can cause damage to hair. However, carefully applied appropriately managed hair extensions actually help fuel hair growth by allowing you to leave your hair alone better.

I always recommend a thorough in person consultation with your extension stylist to go over the many options that exists. Some methods of hair extension may not be the appropriate option for your hair type or for the great you require. That doesn’t mean you can’t have hair extensions, but it also doesn’t mean that you’ve definitely can have hair extensions.

The look above was created with hair extensions, this client’s hair does not grow longer with the amount of highlighting and heat tools she uses.

Hair Jewelry Season

It’s finally here! The weather is finally cool enough that your hair doesn’t get sticky and sweaty and stuck to your entire everything.

That means it’s hair jewelry season!

It’s a perfect season for wearing your hair down and flowy with adornments and decoration or for putting it up and adding additional accessories.

This beautiful piece, shown on my coworker Athena, is 100% unique, just like the rest of the individual pieces available in my Etsy store.

#ElectricGingerKid Refresh Service

One of my favorite jellybeans ever.

She has 40 inch long beaded weft hair extensions, and came in with root grow out of about 6 weeks.

We removed her extensions so they could be retreated to refresh their color, as well as to make the root touch up on her natural hair easier.

Her natural hair was treated with the copper magma lightened from Wella with 30 volume developer.

Her natural hair and the extensions were toned with a mix of Olaplex No.2 combined with Matrix Color Graphics Lacquer in orange and peach.

After blow-drying her natural hair, the extensions were reapplied and everything was styled together.

She’s such a lovely person and I’m always excited to play with her hair.
